Welcome to Muslim Made, our new series spotlighting remarkable businesses in Australia. Through Muslim Made, we’ll share inspiring stories of resilience and determination from Muslim business owners across many industries. Each feature will dive into their unique journeys, the values that shape their work, and the impact they’re making.
At Hejaz, we believe that supporting Muslim entrepreneurs is one way we can strengthen our community and showcase their unique contributions. By featuring their businesses, we aim to help them gain the recognition they deserve and connect with a broader audience.
Art has the power to transform a house into a home, creating a focal point that captures attention and enhances any space. If you're looking for a unique piece that reflects both beauty and meaning, Art by Maha is a name to know.
Founded by Maha Aman, Art by Maha is a one-of-a-kind venture that blends faith, culture, and creativity. Specialising in bespoke Islamic-inspired artwork, Maha's pieces are crafted with deep purpose, making every creation a meaningful addition to any home. What began as a passion has flourished into a business that brings elegance and soul to interior spaces.
"The idea behind my business comes from a heartfelt dream I've always had: imagining people decorating their homes—their safe havens—with something I created, bringing them peace and joy. That wishful dream gave life to Art by Maha," Maha shares.
Born to Pakistani parents and raised in Saudi Arabia before settling in Australia, her multicultural upbringing plays a significant role in shaping her artistic vision. She describes herself as a ‘hybrid breed’ deeply connected to the rich cultures of her heritage. However, her deep-rooted bond with her faith defines her art.
Maha specialises in Islamic calligraphy, incorporating Quranic verses into her creations. Each piece is more than just aesthetically pleasing—it carries profound spiritual meaning. She believes art should have a purpose, a deeper story that resonates with the artist and the viewer.
"If a piece doesn't have a meaningful story behind it, I don't see a reason to create it. Every calligraphic piece I work on features a special Quranic verse, giving it profound meaning. Working on these verses not only deepens my understanding of their message but also inspires me to reflect that meaning within the artwork itself. The peace and contentment I get from writing a verse from the Quran on a canvas is unparalleled."
Beyond canvas art, Maha’s creativity knows no bounds. She enjoys experimenting with various products, including journals, homewares, and wall hangings. However, her personalised wall art remains a customer favourite.
Despite her success, Maha acknowledges the challenges of running a Muslim-owned business. She has noticed that some customers outside the Islamic faith hesitate, assuming her products may be too niche or exclusive. "I like to be versatile with my products and store, ensuring there’s something for everyone," she explains. "However, when people see that it’s an Islamic store or a Muslim-owned business, they often hesitate, thinking it might be too niche or exclusive."
Looking ahead, Maha has big plans for her business. She envisions Art by Maha expanding into an umbrella brand with multiple subdivisions. This vision is driven by her belief in the potential of Art by Maha to serve not only as a business but also as a means of spreading positivity and blessings.
Art by Maha stands out for more than just the quality of its products. It's the exceptional customer service that sets it apart, ensuring every customer feels valued. Maha shows how Muslim-owned businesses can inspire boundless creativity, with a vision to build a brand that appeals to a wider audience, offering something for everyone while remaining true to her values.
