For Australian Muslims, finding halal food that satisfies cultural tastes and culinary cravings can be a challenge—especially with popular international cuisines like Mexican, where halal options are limited. Addressing this need, a young entrepreneur from Singapore, now based in Melbourne, has introduced Halal Fusion Taco, a unique food truck that combines Southeast Asian and Mexican flavours.

Meet Muhammad Mubarak, a 34-year-old entrepreneur who has brought the vibrant taste of Southeast Asia to Melbourne’s streets through his innovative taco creations. This fusion venture blends Southeast Asian flavours with the classic taco, creating a fresh culinary experience that quickly wins over locals and tourists alike.

The Story Behind Halal Fusion Taco

Mubarak had long dreamed of opening a Halal Fusion Taco food truck. “Food is a universal language that brings people together, and I wanted to create a unique dining experience that reflects my heritage,” he explained.

Inspired by Southeast Asia’s viral food fusions, such as the Nasi Lemak Lobster sensation in Singapore and Malaysia, Mubarak saw an opportunity to bring a similar concept to Australia. He recognised that while tacos are well-loved in Australia, halal taco options are few and far between. Seeing this gap in the market, he set out to offer his unique creations to the Muslim community in Melbourne, adding his spin to the local food scene with Halal Fusion Taco.

Mubarak has crafted tacos inspired by Southeast Asian classics like Rendang and Tulang Merah Soup, infusing a touch of his heritage into a familiar favourite. “By blending comforting traditional flavours with the versatility of tacos, we’ve struck a chord with our customers,” he said.

Halal Fusion Taco Signature Menu

Since launching on 1 August 2024, Halal Fusion Taco has rapidly gained fans in Melbourne. The food’s popularity is not just about flavour but also Mubarak’s unwavering commitment to halal standards. As a Muslim business owner, he ensures that all ingredients, particularly meat, are sourced from halal-certified suppliers.

One of the most popular items on the menu is the Heart and Soul Birria, a dish even Mexican customers have come to love. “We’ve had positive feedback from Mexicans themselves! They’ve told us our Birria takes the traditional flavours to another level. Alhamdulillah,” Mubarak shared.

But Mubarak himself has a personal favourite on the menu: the Fusion Flame Tulang. This taco is made with bone marrow and shredded meat, giving it a unique richness and sweetness that makes it stand out.

The Next Big Dream

Mubarak’s passion for food and entrepreneurial drive have been the backbone of Halal Fusion Taco’s success. Looking ahead, he has big plans for growth, with hopes of expanding to more locations across Melbourne and eventually Australia.

Mubarak also has a message for fellow Muslims considering a business venture, “The key to starting a business is unwavering focus and determination. Avoid excuses and distractions. Set your sights on success and never give up. Remember that Allah guides and provides, so trust the process.”

With his Halal Fusion Taco, Mubarak exemplifies how Muslim-owned businesses can bring unique flavours and cultural richness to the Australian community while staying true to halal principles.
